Culinography: Blackout (The Blind Restaurant)

by Erin Gleeson

I just had the most unique dining experience of my life and I have no idea what my food looked like. Basically, the above is what I saw for two hours straight. NOTHING. I mean absolutely nothing. Didn’t matter if my eyes were opened or closed, couldn’t see even a speck of light. This happened […]

Culinography: Shakshouka

by Erin Gleeson

Shakshouka is a delicious and very common breakfast menu item in Israel.  It’s basically a pot of marinara type thick sauce that is baked in the oven with a couple eggs cracked in it. It comes straight out of the oven on a cutting board and is served with warm bread.

Culinography: Holy Wine Country

by Erin Gleeson

Sipping and sharing wine plays a big part in many religions. So to go wine tasting near Jerusalem, perhaps drinking from the same vines that produced wine in biblical times, had more historical significance than your average day at the vineyard. Three friends and I went to a few vineyards in the Ella Valley and […]

Culinography: Ketchup Packet Vodka (TLV)

by Erin Gleeson

As if little $1 yogurt cups of vodka to-go weren’t amazing enough, I have also found oversize ketchup type packets of vodka at corner stores in Tel Aviv! These are also $1 and will fit in by beach bag even easier. I just pick up a bottle of cold seltzer on my way down to […]

Culinography: The Shouk (TLV)

by Erin Gleeson

A shouk is a big outdoor market that sells not only produce but meat, cheese, bread, spices, housewares, clothes, shoes and pretty much anything you can think of. The shouk in Tel Aviv is amazing and much cheaper than a grocery store. Israel is a tiny country– only 260 miles at its longest, 60 miles […]

Culinography: Campari Soda in the Holy Land

by Erin Gleeson

Campari Soda is the perfect summer drink, especially when you’re sweltering in the Middle East like I am right now! The bottle suggests you mix 2/3 Campari to 1/3 soda water, which I think is undrinkable. (I mean, I like bitter, but come on!) A jigger of Campari, a bunch of ice and fill your […]

Culinography: Vodka To-Go (TLV)

by Erin Gleeson

One of the many funny little things I love about Israel is that in almost every convenient or corner store, you can find little cups of vodka to go. In the same place you would find your diet coke in the mini-fridge near the check-out, you will find these portable quadruple shots of vodka for […]

Culinography: Israeli Breakfast (TLV)

by Erin Gleeson

Perhaps my two favorite things in the world are beaches and breakfast- both of which are amazing in Tel Aviv. Pretty much anywhere you go you can find “Israeli Breakfast” which consists of the following standard combo: – Eggs (however you want them, including omelet) – A few types of cheeses (usually some sort of […]
