Umamiventure #11: Banh Mi Crawl, Pt. 1 (Ba Xuyen)

by Kayoko Akabori

Last weekend, we had THE Umamiventure of Umamiventures. It was a gorgeous, cloudless August day- over the course of 4+ hours, 15 of us hit up 4 sandwich spots in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn. Yes, somehow there were 15 people on Planet Earth insane enough to go on this trip- some who had […]

Chida!

by Erin Gleeson

Tessa Liebman, private NYC chef and foodie extraordinaire, has been doing a lot of food research in Mexico lately. Now she’s back and has launched and AMAZING new business I think you should all know about called “CHIDA”. Chida (which means “cool” in Mexican kid slang) serves up “Nieves” (snows), a frozen treat that lies […]

Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest

by Erin Gleeson

I had to see what all the hype was about, at least once…so I joined the massive sweaty crowd this year in Coney Island at the Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest. Joey Chestnut won by eating 64 hot dogs in just over 10 minutes. Disgusting and amazing, all at the same time.

Cafe Kashkar, Brighton Beach (NYC)

by Tyson Kubota

En route to Coney Island this past weekend, I stopped over in Brighton Beach, which is filled with combination English/Cyrillic storefronts like this video/bookstore: We decided to try Cafe Kashkar, an Uyghur place written about in the Village Voice and elsewhere. Surrounded by Russian restaurants and large, hilariously-stocked grocery stores like M&I International Foods, Kashkar […]

Cocktail Cooldown at Hotel del Mano (NYC)

by Kayoko Akabori

When work life gets really hectic, you often forget about the one thing that you really should be taking care of more: yourself. This weekend I shut down, and had some much-needed alone time- somehow, I managed not to even think about work. Instead, I took a nap or two and started reading Siddartha (I […]

Fridgin’ Out: 2 Ice Boxes in Park Slope

by Erin Gleeson

My good friend and roommate Andrea and I share a fridge in our funky townhouse in Park Slope that we share with our 2 friends Dana and Jaimy. Our landlord has an odd sense of where the house priorities lie, but I am glad he thinks it’s necessary to have 2 refrigerators. Here is a […]

umamichatter: Gourmet Shopping in Brooklyn for a Fancy Feast

by Kayoko Akabori

Troy is a dear friend who lives and works in Brooklyn- he only comes out into the city on special occasions (good for him!). He recently went on a gourmet market splurge around Brooklyn, picked up a bunch of delightful foodstuffs, and stayed in and cooked with his lucky bf Corey. Considering how much we […]

umamichatter: Rose Water Restaurant (NYC)

by Kayoko Akabori

Larry works in publishing, and has lived in Park Slope in Brooklyn for the last few years. Had I known him back when I lived in the Slop (as I call it), I may have not moved out. Ok no, I still would have. You see, the Slop, at least 7th Ave, is now barfbag […]

Dear Poor New Yorkers,Please do yourself a favor and go to Blue Ribbon Sushi this week for dinner during Brooklyn Restaurant Week. For $23, you get a seaweed salad, this below, and green tea ice cream. No joke, this is the best deal you will get all year. I do this every year- sometimes twice […]
