Growing up, I was lucky enough to have a full ohinasama set displayed in my house every year. An added bonus was that my mom practices kimekomi ningyo (the art of applying clothing on dolls), so our family set was hand clothed by my mom. It took her over a decade to complete the whole set including the emperor and empress and all their minions.

My favorite doll has always been orange minister with arrows. There is something about his confident, serene face I gravitated towards. And of course the bows! As a tomboy, I definitely related more to this doll than the three ladies in waiting.

Girl’s Day in Japan lands on March 3 every year, and is a day to reflect and celebrate a woman’s happiness. In general I would say this holiday is meant for younger ladies, but let’s celebrate all women on this Sunday at our own Hinamatsuri party!
